Better Brakes in Minutes

A quick pad and rotor change is a great way to improve your 4×4’s braking ability. While an entire brake system upgrade would yield the most impressive results, installing a high-quality EBC disc rotor and brake pad set can be a great way to make some cost-effective braking improvements in under an hour. There are a few different options in pads and rotors for 4x4s and trucks, but whether you’re choosing Greenstuff, Yellowstuff, or Extra Duty orange pads, you’ll see a noticeable improvement the next time you hit the brake pedal.

The best bang for your buck? Just swap out the brake pads if your rotors look fresh and undamaged. But if you want the better performance package and/or need new rotors anyway, adding slotted EBC sport rotors to your brake pad purchase is going to be the next step up in better braking ability.

Whether you choose the Green Stuff, Yellow Stuff, or Orange Stuff EBC pads, they all have a red “brake-in” surface coating for instant safe braking after the install.

Depending on what application, many of the EBC brake pads will have backing shims to reduce brake noise.

Newer 4x4s and trucks have much improved brakes over their predecessors, but the braking ability can still be improved by replacing the stock rotors and brake pads.

It should be fairly easy to break down your old disc brakes by removing the caliper and then sliding off the brake rotor. It might take a couple firm swings with a deadblow hammer to remove the old rotors if they’ve been on there a while. If the rotor looks like it is behind the hub, you’ll have to break down the setup to remove the caliper.

The new rotor should install in about five seconds if it is a slide-on rotor. EBC rotors come in a few different models, but you’ll likely upgrade to the slotted GD Sport Rotors if you decide to swap the rotors as well. They have a thermic black finish that resists corrosion where the pads are not contacting the rotor.

If your hub and rotor are pressed together with studs, you’ll have to go about removing the studs, pulling the old disc rotor out of the equation and adding the new one.

The generally accepted minimum pad thickness (not including the backing plate) is 2.5mm. Try and replace your pads before they get this low, as we’ve seen the pad material break off the backing plate under extreme use when the pad is low (well worn).

The Greenstuff 6000 & 7000 pads offer a 15% improvement in braking. The average friction coefficient is 0.45. They’re made from organic material and are considered medium dust and minimal rotor damage pad.

The Yellowstuff 4000 brake pads offer a 30% improvement in braking, with a friction coefficient of 0.5. They are produced from an aramid material and are not considered a low-dust pad. They gave a large heat range and zero brake fade.

The Extra Duty orange pads are AMECA-tested and GG raed as “highest in friction,” but have a longer life than any other EBC pad made. They’re a carbon granule-based fade-free material that can operate a huge temperature range from freezing to over 1,400 degrees. The backing plate steel have Nucap NRS hook systems for a better bonding of the pad material to the backing plate.
